First Car

“My first car was a 1936 Chevrolet sedan. I bought it in 1956 for thirty-five dollars. When I drove it home, my father took a very brief look at it and told me to take it back and get my money back, or to take it back even if I couldn’t get my money back. He pointed out that in its present condition I’d have to put considerably more than $35 in it to make it road-worthy and that when I factored in licensing and insurance, the car simple wasn’t worth it. So I took it back, and the dealer very obligingly gave me my money back. I think I had driven it about a total of eleven miles.”
