Modo & Modo, the Italian manufacturers of Moleskine and Motorola has just announced the MK1 — a cellular-wireless Pocket PC that combines always-on connectivity and a never-before-seen form factor.

This device will combine the functionality of a phone and an email device with a wide screen and full QWERTY keyboard. It’s 2.8-inch, 16-bit color display will use the Pocket PC standard resolution of 240 by 320 pixels.

The tri-band GSM/GRPS device will also offer built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth wireless networking. The MK1 will run the Phone Edition of Windows Mobile for Pocket PC, but it is not yet known what version of this operating system it will use. Motorola says this smart phone will be available in the second half of this year, and Windows Mobile 2004 is expected to be available around mid-year. The next version of this operating system could make this device significantly more useful, as it is supposed to include on-the-fly switching between portrait and landscape modes.

It will include a 1.3 mega-pixel camera with flash. It will also sport an SD/MMC slot and a small screen on its exterior to display the time, phone-releated information, and even control the audio player. Despite this official announcement, not everything about this model has been revealed. Its processor and amount of RAM are not yet known, for example. Although the device will have a distinctive black color, there is no word whether the elastic band will be kept as a nod to tradition.

Modo & Modo representatives said they decided to license the Moleskine name after a year of market research and product development. The MK1 will combine the functional simplicity of the famous black notebook and the speed and convenience of new technologies.

Word of this device first leaked out last week, though at that time it was thought to be called the Mx300. There are no actual product photos available as of presstime.
