"1) Moleskine notebooks are nice artifacts. A bit like some persons are
attracted to nice pens (and I notice that a lot of our Moleskine
friends do have that thing for pens indeed), others are attracted to
nice notebooks. This is maybe the most subjective of every reasons, and
I am persuaded that, marketing only allowed people to know about Moleskine, and that, Hemingway or no Hemingway, they like the notebook, full stop.
2) Moleskine notebooks are well-made artifacts. Now to a more
down-to-earth argument: I’ve been testing a lot of different notebooks,
from plain carton ones, to real sketchbooks, to spiral-bound
notebooks…and dropped every single of them. Sometimes they were too
heavy, or the spiral element was hindering the hand, or simply the
paper blotted too much…It seems that Moleskine’s are just the perfect
size, just the perfect binding, just the perfect paper (allowing both
handwriting with a fountain pen, to the finest drawing, and I talk
about ‘regular" notebooks only!). Not to mention the clever
elastic-binder, and the back pocket..
3) Moleskine notebooks fits everyone’s pocket. A businessman’s, an
artist’s, a teenager’s, a mother’s, a writer’s, a singer’s, a
musician’s, a film maker’s, a dreamer’s…..Everyone can, in secret or
not, confess one’s artistic senses and sensibility, or aspirations, or
fears, or everyday life. This is certainly the most "naive" answer, but
considering how a simple notebook can bring people together throughout
discussion/photo groups like here in Flickr…I think this is, really,
the part of magic…
Out of 10 000 Moleskiners, maybe a new Hemingway, or a new Van Gogh is hiding? ;o)
How would
you react to Moleskine critics?"
