
"TAMPA, Fla. – Matt DeSalvo often walks around with his left hand covered in writing, which would be understandable if he were a sneaky 12-year-old trying to cheat on his geography test. But he’s a 26-year-old right-hander trying to make the Yankees.
"It’s just ideas, anything really," DeSalvo said, looking over the notes. "When I’m in the car in traffic, I write notes on my hand."
Once he returns home, DeSalvo transfers his musings to one of the dozens of Moleskine notebooks he keeps.
"I read a lot, and sometimes things come into my head and I write them down," DeSalvo said. "It’s just a habit I have."
DeSalvo’s current reading list includes the English translation of "The Book of Five Rings." That’s a 362-year-old treatise on military strategy and sword fighting. He is also deep into "The Myth of Sisyphus" by Albert Camus.
Sisyphus was the mythological Greek who was cursed to roll a boulder up the peak of a mountain only to have it roll down again for all eternity. DeSalvo can relate. After three seasons of steadily moving up the mountain, the boulder crushed him last season…"
