Welcome to OPEN SESSION:  The Moleskinerie Open Thread Discussion.

Moleskinerie invites you, our visitors to share your thoughts on a special topic.

Today it is "Food Notes"

"There is a communion of more than our bodies when bread is broken and wine drunk. And that is my answer, when people ask me: Why do you write about hunger, and not wars or love?"

Food Notes? My Diary-Food-Book is a big Food-Notes Book! Every Day, Every Meal...

Sophie Brown

Nobody ever seems to comment much when they post this picture and ask about food, it's come up more than once. Of course notebooks seem a good idea with any art form, cooking as well.

I knew a restaurant critic and actually he was unwilling to have his notebook out because this was all very incogito. Nice work tho if you can get it.

For some reason I've always disliked this photo.

I have wandered by over the past week and was struck too more by the photo than the question. I'm not a foodie. It's the portable microphone and its stand on the upper left hand corner of the table. This is a reporter's photograph. It's a strange photograph, in terms of "art" for reflection or prompter. Nothing's primped or ironed out here; everything looks slightly uncomfortable. It's just rained, so the wetness is appealing, but it look as if this might be a cold day (emotionally) too. Bizarre. I agree.

I can't say I agree with the other comments regarding the photo. I happen to like it. It's at once artistic and amateur...yet it has the certain quality in its richness and atmosphere that allows me to pretend I am there in that scene.

Now regarding food and notebooks. I happen to have started using my moleskine diary for not only my random scribblings and brain farts but every now and then when I have had a hit with my cooking - such as my recent escapade making whole Chicken Tandoori - I write it down complete with a recipe list and a detailed report on how my 5 senses fared.

Further deconstruction of the image:
1. empty flagpole
2. store across the street
3. computer bag in opposite char (Is the microphone plugged into it?)
4. four slices of ham

Okay, I'll jump in here. I'm a food blogger and use my Moleskine to keep all more notes about meals, recipes, food notes, vegetable garden design and notes. I carry a small Moleskine with me all the time just for the purpose and when I need to do an interview or begin work on a blog post or article, I use my larger book which I carry in a Rickshaw Bags Folio.

As for the photo, the thing is--there's no food "to write home about" on the table.

Sophie Brown

Well it does look like a chilly and wet day for a picnic.
