Inspiration: "Dear Everybody"

A novel written in the form of letter, diary entries, encyclopedia entries, conversations with various people,notes sent home from teachers, newspaper articles, psychological evaluations, weather reports, a missing person flyer, a eulogy, a last will and testament, and other fragments, which taken together will tell the story of the short life of Jonathon bender, weatherman.

Coming this Fall: myDetour in San Francisco

Exciting news from Moleskine - myDetour is coming to the great city of San Francisco this fall. It opens on September 10 and runs through October 1. Moleskine invites everyone in the Bay Area to check out the exhibits in various locations spread out around the city. You can even submit your own creations and potentially become part of the traveling archive of Moleskine notebooks.

Moleskine has joined hands with local bookstores and art supply shops to host the exhibits. Among them are Blick Art Materials, Borders Bookstore, Chronicle Books, Flax Art and Design, San Francisco State University Bookstore, Stanford University Bookstore and Utrecht Art Supplies.

A special feature in the the San Francisco myDetour project is the collaboration with 826 Valencia, a non-profit writing and tutoring center in San Francisco co-founded by Bay Area writer Dave Eggers. Students and volunteers from 826 Valencia were asked to create Moleskine books that reflect the ways in which they relate to their space and their city. Their works will be on display at participating locations.

myDetour benefits lettera27, a non profit organization supported by Moleskine Srl that is dedicated to supporting literacy and education programs around the world and especially in the most deprived areas.

Tim Baynes: "A Rather English Wedding"

England: Deep in darkest Essex my nephew John and his lovely bride, Natalie, are getting married. The sun shoos the clouds away from Ingatestone village. Everyone looks gorgeous, large hats occlude the view in church but not the enjoyment. The families on both sides look so happy for this made-for-each-other couple.

We gather in St Edmunds and St Mary Parish Church, described by Simon Jenkins in England’s Thousand Best Churches as ‘magnificent, a unified Perpendicular composition of red brick with black Tudor diapering. Oh Simon, Yes! The warmth of the brick matches our hearts. The choir, bolstered by delightful trebles from Brentwood School leaves ‘Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring’ more or less in tact during the signing of the register.

Outside the exquisite church we congregate, circulate and catch up on news and gossip. Frocks, hats, ties and shoes are admired or admonished or simply loved. It is the day for family and friends and love. It is Megan and Bron’s first wedding, I am proud father as well as uncle and god father.

New MSK Features

MSK has added 2 new features. 

1. There are new formats with graphics for use by non-English speakers.

It is now it is possible to choose different format to print (pocket, large, xl) and different shapes (standard, weekly, horizontal) for each format; beside, the extra-content will be paginated on the necessary shapes.

2. Blank template (starred) 

For those who prefer to customize their notebook, now it is possible to download empty template in all of our layouts (plain, ruled, squared, music, storyboard, weekly planner). These can be printed, attached on the notebook and filled, so, for example, if you always wanted to have a couple of squared pages inside your plain notebook, or a music page on your ruled. These can also be used as extra pages on your journal. 

The weekly horizontal layout (available in pocket and large format) can also be used by users who want to plain/ruled notebook to have a planner.

I recorded an acoustic version of The Cure's 'Just like Heaven' and made a wee video of it using drawings from my 2009 Moleskine sketchbook.

Music: "Dear Moleskine"

No notebook sighting here, just an intriguing mention in an equally intriguing video by Jay Electronica.

"It has been a minute since anyone has heard from the mysterious Jay Electronica. Just to let you know he’s alive and well, working on new music, and apparently traveling both the globe and time(?), Jay cut some footage from his trip to Asia to a new track of his produced by Just Blaze called “Dear Moleskine.” The footage was shot on location by Jason Goldwatch. Specifically, in this piece, the Pashputinath Hindu Temple and The Bodinath Buddhist Temple in Kathmandu Nepal. It is from a collaborative film/music project between Jay Electronica’s The Dogon Society and DECON. The project currently has no title or street date."

Inspiration: "Children Full of Life"

A CBC series of short documementaries about a class of Japanese children, the notebooks they keep and life lessons learned.

"In the award-winning documentary Children Full of Life, a fourth-grade class in a primary school in Kanazawa, northwest of Tokyo, learn lessons about compassion from their homeroom teacher, Toshiro Kanamori. He instructs each to write their true inner feelings in a letter, and read it aloud in front of the class. By sharing their lives, the children begin to realize the importance of caring for their classmates."

The Beauty of it All...

I haven't really seen anyone else talk about this or even bring this up, so I figured I'd start it. I think I have finally found why the Moleskine® notebooks are just so damn appealing. They are beautiful. Literally, mathematically, proportionately, and aesthetically beautiful. I had suspected it once before, but I was not convinced until a member of another group pointed this out:

"The large and small notebooks are golden rectangles (1:1.618) and the large cahiers is a root 2 rectangle (1:1.414). These are the shapes of the masters and thank God we can actually get paper preformatted this way in the United States. If you don't know what I'm talking about, it may seem silly or like splitting hairs; if you do know what I'm talking about, you'll strongly agree with me."

Amazing. I am not the only one to suspect or confirm the Moleskine® and Phi association! I had noticed long ago that the proportions to my pocket Mole were extremely conducive to not only sketches, but the formatting of my writing just takes on a life of it's own. One day, out of sheer curiosity, I did the measurements, and lo and behold, the Moleskine® is almost a perfect Golden Rectangle.

Dancing down the aisle

Totally unrelated but too fascinating to pass up, presenting the "JK Wedding Entrance Dance," described by Jill and Kevin Kheinz as "Our wedding entrance dance to Forever...yeah, forever."

It took place at a church in Saint Paul, Minnesota.
