Inspiration: The pictures and sketches of JRR Tolkien


The original was published in the first impression of The Hobbit, 1937 (in Chapter 2, Roast Mutton). The coloured version by H. E. Riddett was made for The Hobbit Calendar 1976, and has been used in some illustrated editions of the book.

Tolkien, the interest and importance of Father Christmas extended beyond his filling of their stockings on Christmas Eve; for he wrote a letter to them every year, in which he described in words and pictures his house, and his friends, and the events, hilarious or alarming, at the North Pole…”
