Southwest Moleskiners

570753_848dc093a7_2

Our friend and super-volunteer Che Moleman has opened a new FLICKR group.

85467264n00 I'd like to take a moment to ask if there are any Moleskine addicts out there who live in the American Southwest (Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, Oklahoma). If so, I'd like to invite you to the new group, Southwest Moleskiners.

The idea behind this group is basically the same as this one's, but centered around residents of the Desert Southwest, since we can more easily share dealer locations, make trades/swaps, and even plan regional meetups. Also, since people living in cities like Dallas/Ft. Worth, San Antonio, Austin, El Paso, Albuquerque, Phoenix, Tuscon, and OKC have easy (easier) access to big booksellers, it might be useful to be a liaison or connection to those living in places like Kermit, TX (random small-town example) for obtaining Moleskines or participating in current events.

Please feel free to visit the group, and if you live in the Southwest, I look forward to your participation. Thanks again, and I'm glad to be surrounded by people as fascinating as all you Moleskine addicts, wherever you may live.

ADC Young Guns and Moleskine® Create THE UNDISCOVERED LETTER

902343

The Art Directors Club and Moleskine® announce The Undiscovered Letter, a creative challenge to benefit lettera27, a nonprofit literacy organization dedicated to encouraging the right to education and access to knowledge around the world.

The Undiscovered Letter is open exclusively to past winners of ADC Young Guns, a biennial competition established in 1996 that recognizes the most exciting young talent in advertising, design, video, interactive and other forms of media and visual communications. All five classes of inducte es are eligible to participate. The challenge itself has an intentionally broad scope; participants are asked to submit their interpretation of the 27th letter of the alphabet.

“The Undiscovered Letter is an opportunity to find the intersection between analog and digital and determine how oral and written communication work in the future,” said Ami Brophy, Executive Director of the Art Directors Club. “Pushing boundaries through creativity, vision and ideas in tandem with technology represents the profile of individuals who make up the five classes of ADC Young Guns.”

This joint venture between Moleskine, the little black notebook long used by artists and thinkers, and the Art Directors Club has been developed to promote the best and most creative solutions to literacy and communication issues. A jury of international designers, artists, writers and architects will determine the final 27 submissions, which will then be displayed in a virtual, public exhibition. They will also select a number of entries to appear in a limited edition Moleskine notebook, published in September to commemorate the sixth class of ADC Young Guns and with proceeds going to lettera27.

“Both Moleskine and lettera27 believe that by working with ADC Young Guns we can push unique literacy solutions to the forefront and motivate new activist networks,” said Marco Beghin, President of Moleskine’s US office. “The ADC Young Guns represent a highly creative collective of forward-thinking individuals — the kind of thinkers who can push ideas forward through concepts and communication tools that ultimately activate resources.”

Participating ADC Young Guns will receive Moleskine notebooks in which to develop their ideas for The Undiscovered Letter on February 1. They will have until March 3 to digitally submit their entries, and finalists will be announced on April 1, 2008 — the same date that the Art Directors Club begins accepting entries for the sixth class of ADC Young Guns.

Welcome 2008!

Kwitis

Ring out, wild bells, to the wild sky,
The flying cloud, the frosty light:
The year is dying in the night;
Ring out, wild bells, and let him die.

Ring out the old, ring in the new,
Ring, happy bells, across the snow:
The year is going, let him go;
Ring out the false, ring in the true.

Ring out the grief that saps the mind,
For those that here we see no more;
Ring out the feud of rich and poor,
Ring in redress to all mankind.

Ring out a slowly dying cause,
And ancient forms of party strife;
Ring in the nobler modes of life,
With sweeter manners, purer laws.

Ring out the want, the care, the sin,
The faithless coldness of the times;
Ring out, ring out my mournful rhymes,
But ring the fuller minstrel in.

Ring out false pride in place and blood,
The civic slander and the spite;
Ring in the love of truth and right,
Ring in the common love of good.

Ring out old shapes of foul disease;
Ring out the narrowing lust of gold;
Ring out the thousand wars of old,
Ring in the thousand years of peace.

LOST & FOUND Moleskine

Moleskinerie/FLICKR Moderator Che Moleman has opened a LOST & FOUND discussion thread:

57175395_a99182fbed

I got this idea after reading a post by Gemma McTear here in Moleskinerie on Flickr. She suggested a thread like this, but I figured the idea was good enough to start a whole new thread.

Basically, if you have lost a Moleskine, let others know here. You'd be surprised how many people read this. Likewise, if you have found someone's Moleskine, let them know here. This works strictly on the honor system, but I'm sure that anyone who loses a personal notebook like that would love it if someone else returned it.

A few basic "rules":

1. The world being what it is, don't post personal information such as addresses and phone numbers here. If someone feels their notebook is the one found, Flickr makes it easy to contact the finder one on one.

2. Be honest. I've seen cases of blackmail or extortion (how ghastly!) in other forums, let's not sink to that level. I'm very impressed by the level of professionalism and politeness in this group. Any reward(s) offered is strictly at the discretion and responsibility of the owner. Also, if there are other items found with the notebook, leave them as is. Remember, the honor system works if everyone wants it to.

3. For now, let's only post missing or found notebooks here. There are several other threads which involve general discussions of losing a notebook, but this one should be only for lost & found type posts only.

The First Annual Moleskinerie Exhibit

Mx1

We're excited to celebrate the fourth birthday of Moleskinerie with a retrospective of selected works from our friends and supporters around the world. We would like to recognize this group of writers, artists, bloggers and thinkers who have been featured on the blog in the last year and have consistently used Moleskine in their professional or private pursuits.

The works will be displayed in a permanent gallery on Moleskinerie, updated monthly, starting January 12th, 2008. To honor the participants, Moleskinerie created a limited edition of notebooks and diaries.

This is only the first of what we hope will be many editions of the Exhibit. We hope that you will enjoy the gallery and that it will inspire creative dialogue and foster deeper understanding between cultures.

Tis the gift to come down where we ought to be,

And when we find ourselves in the place just right,

To turn, turn will be our delight

2) After creating an account, log into it. Click Edit Profile in the top tab. Under the Account Info tab you can add a smiling photo of yourself, pick what language the site greets you in, tell us how many times a week you want to hear from us, and other administrative matters. Under the Edit Profile Author Info tab you can tell us more about what you like to write, what you think your novel might be called, and what you do when you're not brooding romantically at the keyboard. On the "My NaNoWriMo" page, you can affiliate with a home region. This tells our computer which NaNoWriMo Regional Lounge to offer you in the forums, which local events calendar and photo links to show you on the Local Events page, and gets you CC'd on emails pertaining to any wild novelist gatherings going on in your area.

3) Begin your novel-planning procrastination by reading through all the great advice and funny stories in the forums. Post some stories and questions of your own. Get excited. Get nervous. Eat lots of chocolate and pamper yourself in preparation for the fiction-fueled escapade to come.

4) On November 1, begin writing your novel. Your goal is to write a 50,000-word novel by midnight, local time, on November 30th. You write on your own computer, using whatever software you prefer.

NaNoWriMo begins today.

Moleskine Asia to sponsor Magical Spaces Project

The Magical Spaces Project is FFW Magazine's initiative to build a collective memory of Singapore's magical places;those loaded with memories and emotional treasures.

789123

"We at Five Foot Way Magazine are proud to announce that Moleskine Asia is the Official Notebook Sponsor of our Magical Spaces Project. MOLESKINE notebooks are more than just notebooks but a special medium, perfect for the recording of these special memories that we have set ourselves out to collect.

For two centuries now Moleskine (mol-a-skeen’-a) has been the legendary notebook of artists, writers, intellectuals and travelers - from gifted artists Henri Matisse (1869–1954) and Vincent van Gogh (1853–1890), to poet and leader of the surrealist movement André Breton (1896-1966), to Ernest Hemingway (1899-1961) considered the most influential writer of the last century and to famous travel writer Bruce Chatwin (1940-1989). These notebooks have proven they can withstand the trials of travel and abuses that ensues from normal use. This is the one true trusted travel journal.

And now, we can count on these notebooks to hold the memories of Singapore’s architecture and its magical spaces."

Happy Anniversary to the Moleskine Russia Community at LiveJournal

542308820_79c068c6a1

One year ago I have create a community  at LiveJournal.

One year ago I can't imagine that the community idea would be so popular among russian speaking artists, and talanted people and all who use it throughout daily work or life. Today I can say that you were right when told me that's really a great journey. Journey with very interesting, talanted and nice people, journey full of inspiration, and totally new feelings and experience.

I have met so much people, we shared ideas and thoughts. One year ago it was just a dream, now it's cool community.

I appreciate all members for their effort and support. I think that they make this community happen and the result is not only popularity, but the deepness of feeelings people share. Because I think that as Dave Gray said: «Drawings are conversation».

This conversation is very beautiful.

Detour: the Parsons Connection

Artists from the Parsons School of Design are also contributing to the Detour experience. Moleskine had approached Steven Guarnaccia, chair of the Illustration Department at Parsons and Detour artist, asking whether he would be interested in teaming up on a special project for Detour. He agreed, and Moleskine provide a group of illustration students with a batch of Detour Opening - Parsons Studentspre-release New York City Notebooks. The students filled 20 notebooks with their own work and displayed them on the opening night of the Detour exhibit the Art Directors Club. Print magazine columnist and illustrator Peter Arkle audited Guarnaccia’s class that day, capturing a few moments of Moleskine’s interaction with the illustration students in this fantastic cartoon.

Detour NYC Preview

Img_8968x

A select group of special guests attended a preview of DETOUR: the Moleskine City Notebook Experience on Sunday, dropping by the Art Directors Club on 29th Street to see the work of more than 70 artists a week before the exhibit’s official opening, June 1st. At the ADC gallery the guests were asked to don archival cotton gloves in order to page through moleskine notebooks featuring the work of designers and artist such as Scott Wilson, Renzo Piano, Shintaro Miyake, Steven Guarnaccia, Terence Conran and Michael Graves.

Metaphysical sculpture duality Isola & Norzi (alias Matteo Norzi and Hilario Isola) dropped by the event and mentioned how much they appreciated Tom Sachs’s work, a moleskine notebook chained shut. Director/producer Spike Jonze chaperoned Johnny Knoxville around the exhibition, stopping to chuckle at Dave Eggers‘ sketches. Photographer Caterina Nelli, who works in Rome and is just starting a residency in Tokyo, was delighted with the archival cotton gloves; by the end of the night, everybody had a pair.

The editorial staff from the Italian architecture and design glossy Abitare were on hand, asking Maria Sebregondi for the whole story on Lettera27 and its new Wiki Africa project. Valerio Berruti and ISCP founder Dennis Elliot showed up especially to see the work of the ISCP artists that Detour curator Raffaella Guidobono had chosen for the show, including Cristina Lei Rodriguez, Dylan Graham, Gabriel Lester and of course Valerio.

Scw CALLING ALL ARTISTS!
WHAT: 14th World Wide SketchCrawl, drawing marathon/fund-raiser for Emergency
WHO: Artists of all ages and skill levels
WHEN: Saturday May 19, 2007
WHERE: Around the globe
INFO: Free registration and location information at www.sketchcrawl.com/forum

All artists, whether they be professionals or just habitual doodlers, are invited to participate in the 14th World Wide SketchCrawl May 19, 2007. While the event is free, participants will be encouraged through their art to raise money for Emergency, a nonprofit international organization based in Italy that provides free medical care to civilian victims of war, landmines and poverty.

SketchCrawl was created to enable people worldwide to share their passion for drawing, says founder Enrico Casarosa. But, he adds, “I believe there's a second thing we should do through SketchCrawl, and that is giving. There is no better reason to come together as a global drawing community than to give. Together, we can raise awareness and money -- with our drawings -- for this worthy and peaceful cause.”

So, dust off that old sketchbook or peel off the wrapper from that nice, new Moleskine. The next SketchCrawl is sure to be around the corner -- your corner -- soon!

WHAT IS SKETCHCRAWL?
SketchCrawl was founded in 2004 in San Francisco as a marathon for the sketch artist. Artists are encouraged to slow down, watch the world around them, and record it through nonstop drawing or writing – whether it be for 20 minutes or eight hours. The event is free, and no skill level is required. More than a dozen events have been held worldwide, with XX artists participating from Singapore to San Diego. In 2006, a SketchCrawl event raised nearly $2,000 for the Pakistani earthquake relief effort.

HOW IT WORKS
Artists can work alone or in groups. Some groups are already established in some cities, including San Francisco. After finding inspiration from their chosen locations, artists share their day’s sketches and other artwork online at Flickr.com and www.SketchCrawl.com. The collaborative spirit of the event brings artists together by sharing views of places and details from all corners of the world. To help raise money for Emergency, artists participating in the 14th SketchCrawl will be encouraged to seek sponsorships of either $1, $5 or $10 per drawing. They also will be invited to donate their work for an online auction, proceeds of which would go to Emergency.

Moleskine Freebie

Hackpak2

I made a little something something for the journal fetishists . . . figure this is as good a place as any to post it. A 2 page PDF of a template that slips it under unlined pages, so that your handwriting doesn't look all cock-eyed, like mine does.
• three 4½" x 7½" with lines spaced at ¼", ½" and ¾"
• one storyboard template with 4" x 3" boxes
all corners are rounded which helps them fit snuggly inside a Moleskine pocket

The travel notebooks are back in Galassia

MoleskineCity.com has more on the travel notebooks in Galassia:

405067735_1955dc7089

"They can be considered real self-made books, both artistic and narrative works, where writing and drawing cohabit in order to tell real and imaginary journeys.This year's edition is dedicated to sea journeys and the notebooks on show can be divided into three categories: the collection of travel watercolors which is destined to become a refined editorial product; the noteboks written for passion which can be turned into artistic travel books; the notebooks proposed as a collective game, new views on the cities, between artistic expressions, reports and personal diaries..."

Today on Notebookism

Notebookism is today's TypePad Featured Blog

Badgetpfeaturedweblogv1 “An empty book is like an infant’s soul, in which anything may be written.” That's a line from poet Thomas Traherne, but it may as well be the mission statement for notebookism. While some of us may associate the word “notebook” with 6th-period Algebra, not so blog founder Armand B. Frasco, who writes of his target audience: “We all share a pleasant affliction -- the urge to create on paper. The smell of smooth creamy paper sends our hearts aflutter...We stare endlessly at the first blank page." Frasco and friends have parlayed this charming fetishism into a lovingly crafted destination for those who want to keep up with a primary way of turning thought into expression. Typical posts include an entry on the visual diary of a former New Orleans resident and one on a soft rubbery prison pen that bends under the slightest pressure. Every Wednesday, check out Blank Page, “your chance to ask, answer and discuss anything notebook-related.” In this era of ubiquitous electronic communication, how nice to see a site devoted to good old-fashioned pen and paper.

Sketch-Crawl To Revive Creativity

Sketchcrawllogo Sometimes it's difficult reconnecting with creativity. Life's responsibilities can often get in the way of a certain freedom our minds need to create art. For some people creative blocks are a constant struggle, while others have found ways through it. Personally, I need to get out in the fresh air for about ten minutes and take a walk. I like the way walking allows my eyes to wander and land on just about everything around me without placing judgements, and how my brain starts working on all the stuff that's going on in my life without any pressure to resolve. I usually come back happier and suddenly motivated to complete that project I've been working on. That's why I was so excited when I came across a website called sketchcrawl.com, the perfect antidote when you're losing your creative edge.

Sketchcrawl.com. is the brainchild of cartoon artist, Enrico Casarosa, who after a night participating in a pub-crawl for a friend's bachelor party, where a group stops in at multiple bars on a given route and has a drink in each, came up with the idea of a sketch-crawl. Armed with some pencils and watercolors, Casarosa spent an entire day walking through the city, stopping to sketch whatever interesting came into view.

"Giving yourself this kind of mandate for a full day changes the way you look around you. It makes you stop and see things just a tad longer, just a bit deeper ... needless to say I loved it," writes Casarosa on the website.

Moleskine's Maria Sebregondi on Lovemarks

Maria2 "Moleskine is a family of notebooks with a rich history that has captured the hearts and minds of people the world over. Maria Sebregondi is in charge of brand equity and communication for Moleskine and she shares her thoughts with Lovemarks.com about Moleskine and what makes the brand a Lovemark.

Lovemarks: Why do you think so many people feel passionate about Moleskine?

Maria Sebregondi: Moleskine is culture, travel, imagination, memory, personal identity. It is a collection of independent tools that accompany everyday and extraordinary events. A Moleskine notebook becomes an integral part of one’s personality. It is a basic, compact and intelligent accessory. Symbolic and practical elements are combined in one story-telling object that releases energy and emotions collected over time.

LM: Lovemarks is premised on the Love/Respect Axis and attaining both High Love and High Respect. How do you relate the ideas of Love and Respect to the way your business works from day to day?

MS: Attention to quality, consumer relations and authenticity are the basis for Love and Respect. Moleskine is obsessed with quality. We are constantly in conversation with our consumers through customer care (we reply personally to everyone!) and direct contact with various Moleskine communities. We do not hesitate to put ourselves on the line and face criticism – which is more than compensated by the gratification we receive.

LM: Great stories feed Mystery. How does Moleskine use storytelling to add Mystery to its business?

MS: Moleskine is a notebook that tells a story. Its place in history is as an anonymous keeper of sketches and notes, before they became famous pictures or pages of well-loved books. Moleskine is also a ‘book yet to be written’ and the notebook’s owner is the person writing it. The Mystery, therefore, is two-fold: in its legend and future destination. Moleskine enhances its creative and dreamlike aura by involving artists, writers and designers in interactive exhibitions and events, such as the group show Detour and the My Detour events to be held in June 2008 in New York; by offering itself as a pocket-sized trusty companion for meaningful existential experiences; and by interfacing with communities on the Web."
